Daffodils in vase

Clearing Debris

It’s here! Spring is here!

Spring is my favorite time of year (don’t tell Fall, I tend to flip-flop anyway), and we ushered her in on March 20 in the early morning hours. Spring is the return of more sunshine as the sun extends his stay a little longer each day. More time to be in nature!

Think for a moment what Spring means to you, both literally and figuratively. In nature, Spring is a time of renewal, new life and new growth, a time of higher energy after months in rest. All of nature moves in accordance with these natural cycles and rhythms.

We can easily adopt those natural cycles into our own lives. We can open up the space to invite in new and wonderful things. Think of the daffodils that appear this time of year. After hibernating all winter, storing up nutrients and protected by the earth, the warmth of Spring arrives and brings forth the beauty of the flower.

We can prepare ourselves for this new burst of energy as we clear away the debris of the past year in both our inner and outer worlds. Spring is a time to release what no longer serves us. That may mean “stuff,” those shelf sitters that are just collecting dust or the 40 of the 50 wine glasses you’ve collected over the years. Or it may mean relationships or jobs or a volunteer position that just isn’t working for you anymore. It may even be limiting beliefs.

Believe me, I’ve learned all this the hard way, and while I didn’t have 50 wine glasses, I had plenty of things I wasn’t using and was able to release during my recent move. And as a serial volunteer, I know that when my focus has changed it’s best for me and the organization if I move on. I’m still working on the limiting beliefs part.

Once the debris is cleared, you have space to invite in the new. Maybe that means organizing your spices alphabetically (yes, me), or choosing the organizations you volunteer for to align with your current beliefs (again, me), or finally writing that new book (not me). Maybe it’s taking an old idea that you had and bringing it back to life. And maybe it’s inviting new people into your life, those that have your back.

If all this seems overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. I find meditation particularly good for this. As you quiet your mind, you have the space to listen to your soul, to what really speaks to you. Follow this up with some journaling and, almost by magic, the answers will appear. Then see it in your mind as already being real, see it as clearly as you possibly can. Believe in yourself, you made it happen.
