At times I feel “stuck” and I’m guessing you do too. Like I’m sort of wedged in to a tight space, and it’s easier to stay than to figure out how to get out. But staying put only holds you back from moving forward.
For some, it can be immobilizing and depressing. For me, it creates boredom or sometimes a little anxiety, like I’m waiting for something to happen. When I recognize this, I know it’s time to do something about it. That means I need to understand why I’m feeling stuck.
Here are some questions to ponder that might help:
Are my expectations of myself too high? Feeling like you’re not living up to your expectations can be demoralizing. Perfection is soooo overrated, and unattainable, yet we often expect to do everything perfectly.
Are you comparing yourself to others? Brené Brown once said, “Stay in your own lane. Comparison kills creativity and joy.” This is how I feel when I am stuck.
What are my goals and purpose? Living without purpose is one of the quickest ways to find yourself in a rut. Without a sense of direction, how can you get un-stuck? There are many tools to help you clarify your goals and purpose: vision boards, journaling, vision statements. Putting them on paper helps to make them feel within reach.
How much time to I spend on education? Once you’ve determined your goals, find ways to expand your knowledge to help you achieve those goals. There are countless classes you can take either in person or online. Many are free and available to everyone.
Do my friends motivate me? The people you surround yourself with have a significant effect on how you live your life. Include people in your live that motivate you, that are kind and caring and that have your back.
How willing am I to step out of my comfort zone? When was the last time you found something fascinating? Change things up and try something new. Be spontaneous! It helps you to get out of your daily routine.
Do I practice gratitude? It’s easy to forget those little things in life that you are grateful for. When I get stuck, I find that keeping a simple gratitude journal brings in the light and helps to show me the way out of that tight space I’m stuck in.
Remember, just because you feel stuck, doesn’t mean that you are. You’re in control of your life and you can take the actions right now that will get you unstuck. Find what you want in your life and get started. Just simply MOVE!
