I was introduced to a new meaning for the word “glimmer” recently. Glimmers are those moments in your day that make you feel joy, happiness, peace or gratitude. I thought what a sweet word, glimmer. And then I realized that’s what I do everyday, I just call them my treasures.
Giving them a name helps me to be more aware, otherwise my treasures may go completely unnoticed. It is my reminder that, while these are difficult times, these little sparks of joy still exist, all around me. And the more I pay attention, the more treasures I find, the easier it is to find them.
My treasures come in many forms and shapes and sizes. It may be something tangible, like seeing the tiniest dog in a teeny tiny sweater, or an event, like the snowy plovers are back from their migration!
You might have seen many of my treasures, as I post “The Treasure of the Week” on my weekly emails, so you get the idea. And until now, I hadn’t considered what constitutes a treasure. So after some thought, this is what I recognize:
I feel a shift in my body, my thoughts, my emotions
I feel a little glimmer of energy and a smile is sure to appear. The day has become just a little better, and I feel a spark of awe.
Treasures are easier to spot in certain locations
I recognize that there are common places for me that these treasures appear, although they show up anywhere. For me, the common places include anywhere there are children or animals, anywhere in nature, anytime I’m surrounded by friends or loved ones.
I have rituals that are built around treasures
That might mean looking through the hole of a hag stone and then holding it to my heart before releasing it. Or it might mean simply taking a picture or video of the treasure.
I like to share my treasures with others
My husband sees many of my treasures either because I’ve brought home an especially special rock, or I’ve shown him a picture. I also text images of them to friends.
Look for treasures (or glimmers if you prefer) in your own life. They’re not hard to find. The smell of cookies baking, a rainbow after a storm, the perfect sunset, finishing a task you’ve put off, sleeping in. You might find your own treasures in these and more.
