On the heels of last week’s article “Adventuring Abroad,” I’m lovingly reminded of this simple truth: there’s no place like home.
Oh sure, it’s great seeing the world, learning about history and different cultures, meeting new people. And as I said, it’s good for you. And yet, for me, it’s always nice to return to my home, to what’s familiar to me, and of course, to my cats.
So, in an effort to keep things balanced, here are some ways to make your home a place you look forward to returning to.
Make your home a sanctuary
Set your home up so that you feel a sense of peace and security and comfort. If your idea of this is a cozy blanket, a cup of tea and a good book, make sure you have those at the ready. Enjoy time in the kitchen? Put your focus there.
Include self-care space
If you like long, lingering baths, be sure to have all the goods on hand for that. You might even try creating your own bath products with scented oils and such. If you find art relaxing, set aside an area of your home where you keep all your art supplies. Of course don’t forget a corner or a room for meditation.
Surround yourself with things you love
I’m a bit of a minimalist, and don’t like too many tchotchkes, so my “things” are carefully selected. Some remind me of my travels. Others are special books. Many are gifts from friends. If it’s in my house, they are special to me.
Add the extras
Things like live plants, flowers, music and your favorite scented candles really help your home become a place to leave stress behind.
Don’t forget the outdoor space
Even if all you have is a small patio or balcony, be sure to include that in your plans. Bring in lots of greenery and cozy spaces for sitting. Offer areas of sun and shade if possible, a table to set a cool drink or a good book on, and privacy from the outside world.
Keep the peace
Life is too short to argue over the little things, and in the great scheme of things, it’s all little things, right? Even so, things are said, stuff happens, and feelings are hurt. Learn to communicate. Be considerate. And don’t take anything personally.
Dorothy did indeed get it right. There’s no place like home. So adventure away, see the world, enjoy your travels, and when you’re done know you’ve created a place you long to return to.
